Roles and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
Understand what first aid is, the aims of first aid, the legal responsibilities of a paediatric first aider, obtaining consent, infection prevention and control, and the safe use of workplace first aid equipment. Learners also become familiar with the contents of a paediatric first aid kit.
Assessing emergency situations
Learn how to assess a scene safely, identify hazards, summon emergency assistance, communicate effectively with casualties and bystanders, and prioritise treatment. Training includes the Primary Survey (DR ABC) and the AVPU scale for assessing responsiveness.
Infant and child CPR & AED use
Gain practical experience performing CPR on infant and child manikins. Learn how and when to call emergency services, when CPR should be started and stopped, and how to safely use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on both infants and children.
Recovery position and Secondary Survey
Learn how to conduct a secondary assessment using the SAMPLE approach and identify injuries that may not be immediately obvious. Practise placing infants and children into the recovery position and carrying out ongoing monitoring.
Choking emergencies
Recognise the signs of mild and severe airway obstruction and practise the correct management of choking in both infants and children. Training includes practical skills using paediatric choking scenarios.
Seizures and convulsions
Learn how to recognise and manage seizures in infants and children, including febrile convulsions and epilepsy-related emergencies.
Bleeding emergencies
Understand the different types of bleeding and how to provide appropriate first aid. Topics include:
- External bleeding
- Internal bleeding
- Nosebleeds
- Small cuts and grazes
- Bruising
- Penetrating wounds
- Wounds with embedded objects
- Amputations
As a bonus, our course also includes life-threatening bleeding control using tourniquets and wound packing.
Shock (hypovolaemic shock)
Learn how to recognise the signs and symptoms of shock in infants and children and provide effective first aid treatment while awaiting emergency medical assistance.
