Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)

CPR, AED use, choking and bleeding control for workplace emergencies.

Course Overview

This practical and engaging one-day Emergency First Aid at Work course is designed for anyone who may need to provide emergency first aid in the workplace. No previous experience is required.

The course combines classroom teaching, practical demonstrations and hands-on practice to give learners the confidence to respond quickly and effectively in a medical emergency while awaiting professional help.

By the end of the course, learners will understand the role of a workplace first aider and be able to assess incidents, manage life-threatening emergencies and provide first aid for a range of common workplace injuries and illnesses.

In addition to covering all FAIB Emergency First Aid at Work learning outcomes, this course also includes enhanced training in the recognition and management of anaphylaxis, the use of Adrenaline Auto-Injectors (AAIs), and the management of severe bleeding using modern bleeding control techniques including wound packing and tourniquet awareness.

These additional topics provide learners with practical skills that are increasingly valuable in workplaces, public settings and everyday life.

Certification

Successful learners receive a FAIB-accredited Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate valid for 3 years.

The certificate includes:

  • Emergency First Aid at Work
  • Life-Threatening Bleeding Awareness
  • Anaphylaxis Awareness

This course provides 6 hours of verifiable CPD.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a workplace first aider
  • Assess an emergency situation safely and effectively
  • Protect themselves, casualties and others from further harm
  • Conduct a Primary Survey using the DR ABC approach
  • Assess a casualty’s level of responsiveness using the AVPU scale
  • Summon appropriate emergency assistance when required
  • Recognise cardiac arrest and provide effective adult CPR
  • Safely use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Place an unconscious breathing casualty into the recovery position
  • Conduct a Secondary Survey and obtain relevant casualty information
  • Recognise and manage choking emergencies
  • Recognise and manage seizures safely
  • Identify and control external bleeding
  • Provide first aid for minor wounds, burns, scalds, cuts, grazes, bruises and splinter injuries
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of shock and provide appropriate first aid treatment
  • Monitor and reassure casualties while awaiting professional medical assistance
  • Demonstrate practical competence in CPR, AED use, recovery position, choking management and casualty assessment

Bonus content:

  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis
  • Assist with the safe administration of Adrenaline Auto-Injectors (AAIs)
  • Recognise life-threatening bleeding and apply appropriate bleeding control measures
  • Demonstrate an awareness of modern catastrophic bleeding interventions including wound packing and tourniquet use

The course covers all FAIB Emergency First Aid at Work requirements together with additional training as specified.
