Our Paediatric First Aid (PFA) course is designed for anyone responsible for the care of infants and children, including nursery staff, childminders, preschool workers, teachers, teaching assistants, nannies, sports coaches, foster carers and parents. The course meets the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and provides the knowledge and practical skills needed to respond confidently to paediatric emergencies.
Successful learners receive a FAIB-accredited Paediatric First Aid (PFA) certificate valid for 3 years.
This course meets the Paediatric First Aid requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.
This course provides 12 hours of verifiable CPD.
Certificates are issued following successful completion of practical and written assessments.
Learn the principles of first aid, the aims of first aid treatment, legal considerations including consent, infection prevention and control, and the contents and safe use of a first aid kit.
Develop the ability to assess incidents safely, identify hazards, communicate effectively with casualties and bystanders, prioritise treatment, and perform a structured Primary Survey (DR ABC).
Gain hands-on experience performing CPR on infant and child manikins and learn how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) safely and effectively during a cardiac arrest.
Learn how to assess and care for an unresponsive infant or child who is breathing normally, including conducting a secondary survey and placing casualties into the recovery position.
Recognise the signs of mild and severe airway obstruction and practise the correct treatment for choking in both infants and children.
Understand how to recognise and manage seizures, including febrile convulsions and epilepsy-related emergencies.
Learn how to manage external bleeding, nosebleeds, amputations, embedded objects, penetrating wounds, internal bleeding and hypovolaemic shock. Training also includes the management of life-threatening bleeding using tourniquets and wound packing.
Recognise the signs and symptoms of common paediatric medical emergencies and provide appropriate first aid while awaiting professional help.
Learn how to identify allergic reactions, recognise anaphylaxis, and safely assist with the use of Adrenaline Auto-Injectors (AAIs) such as EpiPen, Jext and Emerade.
Develop the skills needed to recognise and manage fractures, dislocations, sprains, strains and other musculoskeletal injuries.
Learn how to identify serious injuries involving the head, spine and neck and understand the appropriate first aid response.
Understand how to manage incidents involving foreign bodies in the nose, ears and other orifices, as well as common eye injuries affecting infants and children.
Practical competence is assessed throughout the course alongside a short multiple-choice assessment.
A short multiple-choice assessment is also completed to confirm understanding of the course content.
No previous first aid experience is required.
